Washington State SR22
Reader question:
Can you tell me the sort of coverage which will come with my Washington state SR22 auto insurance policy, if I buy just the minimum amount?
Jacob
Glad you asked, Jacob.
Washington state SR22 insurance can be bought with a fairly small amount of coverage, at least compared to a few other states. Since Washington is an at fault car insurance state, all you need to purchase to meet the minimum requirements of the auto insurance laws is liability coverage. Liability coverage includes property and injury liability. The property liability is the coverage for those damages made by the person who is found at fault for the accident (if said person is you), while the injury liability is for the injuries of the driver/passengers of the vehicle found not to be at fault, but not for the drivers or passengers of the at fault vehicle.
In Washington state SR22 policies, you must have the following amounts of each one of these:
- A $50,000 injury liability limit per crash, with $25,000 alotted to each person.
- $10,000 in property damage liability.

Washington SR22 Auto Insurance Rates
Reader question:
What are Washington SR22 rates like these days?
Amber
Thanks for asking, Amber.
WA SR22 rates are pretty median compared to the rest of the states, coming in with the 19th highest rates, followed closely by Florida and Pennsylvania. The average rates for car insurance in Washington are around $803 a year, but of course, SR22 rates will tend to e twice–or in some very bad cases, even three times–that amount.
This isn’t to say that the best SR22 rates are going to be $1600. It’s likely that if you get such a price, then you aren’t looking hard enough. Sure, that may be the average price, but it’s also the average price which is quoted to the average person who does not shop for theit auto insurance online–unlike you.
Such average people pay a lot of money for their laziness–an estimated $400 on average for their premiums. They pay so much for their premiums simply because of the fact that they aren’t shopping around for their auto insurance quotes. When you pull up your SR22 rates online from several different companies, you can see the wide variances and make a better choice than the average Joe.

Washington State SR22 Filing – DUI Insurance
Reader question:
When I get done with my Washington state SR22 filing, will my rates go back to what they were before?
Christa
Great question, Christa.
Well, a lot can change in three years, so I very much doubt that you would bounce completely back to the previous prices you had as soon as your SR22 filing was over. Besides that, you wouldn’t be able to bounce back to anything immediately after your filing ends and you get an unrestricted license, because your drunk driving incident or your accumulated traffic points, or whatever it was that put you on the road to license suspension, is going to stay on your record for a total of five years, meaning that after you finish your SR22 filing you will still have two years to deal with higher rates–they might not be quite so high, but they won’t go completely down.
But this is all the more reason to, even before your SR22 filing ends, be extra watchful of your driving and stay out of trouble on the road. Follow all of the rules, at least to the extent that keeps you flying under the radar, and you will be able to come out of it five years later with several years of an accumulating good driving record, which means you could immediately get a good driver’s discount.

SR22 Auto Insurance Quotes in Washington
Reader question:
I have a policy with SR22 in Washington, and I want to know, is the post-accident procedure any different for SR22 holders? Is there some kind of extra information we need to give?
Marcus
Thanks for asking, Marcus.
No other driver (civilian driver, anyhow) has a right to know about your possession of an SR22 in Washington, and your owning of such should not in any way be involved when you get into a car accident. You just exchange the usual information, such as names, policy numbers, phone numbers, car insurance company names, and so on, so that whoever needs to file a claim with the other’s company can do so, and so that whoever is at fault can get prepared.
In addition to that, whether you have an SR22 in Washington or not, you should also take a couple of other steps after an accident to make sure of the best (or least negative) experience with your claims process. Keep a disposable camera stored in your glove compartment, and when you get in an accident make sure to take pictures of the damage on both cars. This is so that the other driver can’t claim more damage than was actually caused, thus getting you in trouble and in fraud.
You should also look at the witnesses who were around the accident and try to gather their names and phone numbers. In case the fault of the accident is contested, you will be able to refer to them for proof.

Seattle Non Owner SR22 Auto Insurance
Q: I have a Seattle non owner SR22 policy. Why is it so expensive? How can I save money?
A: Your Seattle non owner SR22 policy is costing you because it’s missing a pretty big puzzle piece which car insurance companies require in order to put together the best picture of what your rates should be–a car. Even if you drive the same car all the time with your non owner policy, it can’t be factored into your insurance policy, so your company has to rate your policy as if you were driving a riskier car because they can’t know what car it is you’re using.
You can save money on your Seattle non owner SR22 premium by getting discounts. Many of the available discounts require cars, but there are those which don’t. You could try getting all of your insurance policies on a multi line with one company, for example, or you could take a few classes in defensive driving. You could take in your transcript if you’re a student, a degree if you’re in engineer, or you could join a car club or a teacher’s union in order to get a discount. Get a list of discounts from your car insurance company and circle the ones which would apply to you, and then ask the company to apply them.
Why Is SR22 Auto Insurance So Expensive?
Q: Why is my SR22 insurance premium so expensive?
A: As they say, when you do the crime, you got do the time. SR22 rates are punitive, and while it may be extremely unpleasant having to pay such high rates during the time you have to file SR22, it is a successful deterrent. However, that’s no why your rates are so high.
As a matter of fact, SR22 rates are high because policy holders who must have an SR22 filed on their behalf are considered to be very risky to insure. An attitude like that stems from the fact that most people who have a SR22 insurance policy have one because they were convicted of drunk driving–obviously prey easy to cause an accident that way.
Since car insurance companies measure what they charge you according to the risk you pose to them, such factors play a big part. If you have to have, then you will pay more into the insurance pool than will people who have never made a driving mistake in their lives, have mid sized economic hybrid cars, are middle aged, and so on.
Discounts on Seattle SR22 Auto Insurance?
Q: My good student discount took a good chunk off of my Seattle SR22 premium for a while there, but I just finished school and now my prices are up high. Is there something else I can do to save the same amount of money?
A: What you did in school while you were getting that good student discount can have a big effect on what kind of discount you can get on your Seattle SR22 policy now that you’re out. Depending on what you majored in, you may be able to come across some good savings.
Some companies are beginning to offer very specific discounts, most recently aimed towards those who have degrees in science and mathemaics fields. Reasoning behind this comes from studies which say that people in such fields make fewer careless mistakes and file fewer claims because they have a higher attention to detail than your average driver.
If you aren’t a microbiology major or a budding cancer researcher, don’t fret, since your school work might still get you a deal. If you’re a teacher, then many companies have a discount which, while it may be relatively small, is offered if you join a union and covers the expenses of joining a union.
Non Owner Spokane SR22 Auto Insurance
Q: Can I save money on a non owner Spokane SR22?
A: Saving money on a non owner Spokane SR22 car insurance policy is going to be harder than saving it on another policy simply because, without a car to take into account, car insurance companies are going to assume that the vehicles you’re driving are riskier than average. I wouldn’t be financially viable for them to assume otherwise.
If you do intend on saving money on your Spokane SR2 for non owner drivers, here are many discounts which do not have to do with cars which you may be able to get. For one, you can get discounts which involving taking driving classes, or you can get student discounts for any school going people on your policy, senior discounts for the older drivers. If you are a teacher, you can join a union for a discount, or get a discount from a car group you join.
If you end up buying a car for yourself, you will have more discounts available, but you will have to let go of your Spokane SR22 for non owner drivers and get a regular car insurance policy.
Adding Teenage Driver To Tacoma Washington Auto Insurance Policy?
Q: Does adding ta teenager to an auto insurance policy make my prices go up, or should I have her get her own policy?
A: Adding a teen to your policy will definitely make your prices go up, but you can only have her get her own policy if she is old enough. Usually, the youngest age someone can get an insurance policy for themselves is when they are eighteen. Up until then, they either have to be uninsured or be on an older person’s policy. You will have to put your teen on your policy if they live with you, because if your car insurance company finds out you have a high risk individual in your house they might cancel you for not informing them. Even if your kid doesn’t drive your car, they won’t believe you.
Rather than worrying, contact your car insurance company and see what discounts they have available for teenage drivers. At least three should be available, among them a student discount, which will allow you to have some taken off of your premium if your teen makes a B average or above in school, and a driver’s education iscoun, which will award your teenager for taking a general driver’s education course.
Vancouver Washington SR22 Auto Insurance Quotes
Q: Since I’m required to have a Vancouver SR22 car insurance policy, aren’t companies supposed to sell one to me? Because I can’t find one.
A: No car insurance company is required to sell you insurance when you pose so much risk, as all holders of SR22 policies do. While car insurance companies aren’t able to discriminate based on unrelated reasons, such as the color of your skin or your religion, they are able o discriminate based on how much risk you pose, or, in other terms, how many claims people in your demographic are likely to file.
If you have trouble finding someone to get your policy from, you should try higher priced companies which sell to people with expensive cars and other high risk types. It’s easier to get a policy from one of these, although not certain, and it’s also cheaper than the other alternative.
If you can’t find a way in that way, then instead you can get a policy by joining up with your state assigned-risk pool, where the Department of Insurance will randomly hand you over to a car insurance company, which will have to insure you (at a very high price) even if they already denied you when you went there on your own.
